An Excursion into the Bavarian Forest
The Bavarian Forest begins right on Passau's doorstep - Germany's oldest low-mountain national park region. This day trip leads from the three-rivers city into the green wilderness: to the Bavarian Forest National Park with its animal enclosures, up onto the Neuschoenau Treetop Walk with its egg-shaped tower, and to the Dreisessel at the three-country corner. Primeval forest, views and hearty forest dining - the perfect contrast to the city's baroque.

We drive from Passau into the national park, visit the animal enclosures, walk the treetop trail and in the afternoon climb to the Dreisessel.

Bavarian Forest National Park - animal enclosures
About 45 minutes from Passau the Bavarian Forest National Park begins, Germany's first national park. In the animal enclosures, lynx, wolf, wisent and capercaillie live in spacious habitats - native wilderness up close on an easy circular trail.
Tip: Bring sturdy shoes - the trails in the enclosures are left natural.

Neuschoenau Treetop Walk
The treetop walk leads along a 1.3 km walkway through the canopy up to the 44-metre egg-shaped tower. From the top, on a clear day, the view stretches across the Bavarian Forest to the Alps.

Around Neuschoenau and Grafenau there are rustic taverns with regional cuisine - Bavarian Forest specialties, mushroom dishes and homemade desserts.

The Dreisessel at the three-country corner
The Dreisessel is a striking granite rock near the point where Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic meet. A short climb leads to the weathered rock formations with wide views over three countries.
Tip: From the hikers' car park it is only about 20 minutes on foot to the summit rock.

Back in the three-rivers city, the day winds down in a tavern in the old town - after forest and wide views, the baroque coziness by the river.
