Nature & Hiking in Passau

Around Passau begins a landscape made for walking. To the north the Bavarian Forest rises with its vast woodlands and gentle heights, one of the largest unbroken forest areas in Central Europe, while to the south the rolling pre-Alpine country of the Inn beckons. Between them winds the wild and romantic Ilz valley, from which the black pearl of the forest flows down to the Danube.

Long-distance trails such as the Danube trail run high above the river and reward walkers with sweeping views of its loops, castles and villages. Nature trails along the Ilz, shaded riverside paths and viewing platforms make the region appealing for gentle strollers too, while the Bavarian Forest offers ridge walks, moors and quiet stream valleys.
