Bavarian Forest: new hiking trails in the national park
The Bavarian Forest National Park is expanding its trail network: three newly signposted themed routes lead through primeval woodland and along restored peat bogs.
The Bavarian Forest National Park, Germany's oldest large protected area of its kind, has opened three new themed hiking trails for the 2026 summer season. The routes open up especially striking landscapes between the Lusen and Rachel mountains — from regenerating mixed mountain forests to rewetted upland bogs. A particular focus is on experiencing the so-called wild forest nature, where the woodland regenerates undisturbed after bark-beetle outbreaks and storms. Information boards and an accompanying digital offering explain the local flora and fauna along the way, including lynx, capercaillie and Ural owl. The trails come in varying lengths and connect to the stops of the Igelbus shuttle lines, making them easy to reach without a car. The park urges hikers to stay on the marked paths to protect these sensitive habitats.
